日本の西部にある古代遺跡群が、世界遺産に登録されることになりました。
これはユネスコ（の世界遺産委員会）が日曜日（７月９日）、ポーランドのクラクフで開かれた会合で決定したもので、福岡県の神聖な島とされる沖ノ島と宗像の関連遺跡群が世界（文化）遺産に追加されます。
沖ノ島は、４世紀から９世紀にかけて、日本と東アジア各地を結ぶ航海の安全を祈って行われた祭祀の場や装飾品が残っていることが特徴です。沖ノ島への立ち入りが許されているのは男性だけです。
５月には（ユネスコの諮問機関である）事前審査委員会が、８つの遺跡のうち４つについては考古学的な価値が認められないとして推薦から除外するよう勧告しましたが、（日本の）世界遺産推進会議は８つの遺跡は密接につながっているとして、一括した登録を求めていました。

A group of ancient monuments in western Japan will be registered as a World Heritage site.
UNESCO officials made the decision on Sunday at a meeting in the Polish city of Krakow. The sacred island of Okinoshima and related sites in the Munakata region of Fukuoka Prefecture will be added to the World Heritage list.
Okinoshima features ritual sites and ornaments used between the fourth and ninth centuries to pray for safe voyages between Japan and other parts of East Asia. Only men are allowed to visit.
In May, a preliminary review panel argued that four of the eight sites should be dropped from the proposal because it could not confirm its archaeological value. But the committee members called for registering all eight monuments together because they are strongly connected.
