ニューヨーク総領事やトルコ特命全権大使などを務めた明治政府の外交官内田定槌（サダツチ）氏の邸宅として、1910年に東京渋谷区に建てられました。アメリカ人建築家J.M.ガーディナーによって設計されました。
建物は木造2階建てで塔屋がつき、華やかな装飾が特徴のアメリカン・ヴィクトリアンの影響を色濃く残しています。1階は食堂や大小の客間など重厚な部屋が、2階には寝室や書斎など生活感あふれる部屋が並んでいます。
1997年に寄贈を受けた横浜市は、山手イタリア山庭園に移築復原し、一般公開しました。そして同年、国の重要文化財に指定されました。室内は家具や調度類が再現され、当時の外交官の暮らしを体験できるようになっています。

Designed by the American architect J. M. Gardiner and built in 1910 in Shibuya, Tokyo, as the residence of the Meiji Government's diplomat, Sadatsuchi Uchida, who served as consul general of New York and special ambassador to Turkey.
The building is a two-story wooden building with a steeple and is strongly influenced by the gorgeous decorations characteristic of American Victorian architecture.
The first floor consists of dignified rooms including a dining room and large and small guest rooms, the second floor consist of a bedroom, library and rooms that resonate living here.
The building was donated to Yokohama City in1997 and it was moved and restored in Yamate Italian Garden and was opened to the public.
In the same year, it was designated as an important cultural asset of the country.
The furniture and furnishings in the interior were reproduced and you can experience how living as a diplomat was at that time.
